How to ship lithium batteries safely
Lithium batteries power everything — and they are regulated dangerous goods that can fail dangerously if mishandled. Here is how to ship them safely and within the rules.
Know which battery you have
Both are Class 9 dangerous goods. The exact requirements depend on the battery type, the watt-hours or lithium content, whether it ships alone or installed, and the mode of transport — so always confirm the current DOT/IATA rules and your carrier’s acceptance before you ship.
Lithium-metal (primary)
Non-rechargeable lithium batteries that contain lithium metal. They ship under UN 3090 (alone) or UN 3091 (in or with equipment).
Lithium-ion (rechargeable)
The rechargeable cells in phones, laptops, tools, and EVs. They ship under UN 3480 (alone) or UN 3481 (in or with equipment).
Pack for the failure you hope never happens
- Protect the terminals — cap, tape, or use original packaging so terminals cannot short against metal or each other.
- Isolate each battery — separate cells so they cannot contact one another; non-conductive dividers help.
- Do not overload a package — keep within weight limits and leave room for protective cushioning.
- Disable devices in transit — power equipment fully off and guard switches against accidental activation.
- Avoid extreme heat — never ship a damaged, recalled, or swollen battery, and keep packages out of heat sources.
- Cushion and immobilize — pack so nothing shifts, crushes, or punctures in transit.
Label and document correctly
Lithium battery shipments require the correct hazard markings, the applicable UN number, and the documentation the mode demands. Getting the marks and paperwork right is not optional — incorrect or missing documentation is one of the most common reasons a battery shipment is refused or delayed.
Where a broker helps
A broker experienced in hazardous materials matches your battery shipment to carriers that accept it, helps get the packaging and documentation right, and keeps the move compliant end to end — which is exactly the kind of regulated freight where guessing is expensive.
